Overview

Started in 2009, the Mandatory Water Efficiency Labelling (WELS) is a grading system with 0/1/2/3 tick rating denoting the water efficiency level of a product.  This a follow-up scheme from the Voluntary Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme introduced in 2006.

Currently, MWELS covers taps and mixers, dual-flush low capacity flushing cisterns (LCFCs), water closet (WC) flush valves, urinal flush valves and waterless urinals (2/3 tick rating) and clothes washing machines intended for household use (2/3/4-tick rating). With MWELS, consumers can make well-informed choices when purchasing water fittings and appliances.

With effect from 1 Apr 2017, products advertised/offered-for-sale or displayed shall bear the new water efficiency labels. These labels must be shown with prominence to help consumers make informed choices.

Consumer Advisory

Consumers should look out for WELS labels when purchasing water fittings and appliances in any local physical shops such as retail shops, suppliers’ showrooms, hardware stores, etc. or from any online shopping platforms. The list of brands and their respective registered suppliers can be found on the WELS Products webpage

Consumers should only purchase water fittings and appliances that bear the WELS label because using products which are not WELS-registered may pose a risk to the water quality, lead to water wastage and affect the reliability/durability of the water fittings, which in serious cases, may lead to water contamination. There may be serious health impacts from drinking contaminated water.

We strongly encourage the public to report any non-WELS rated or non-compliant water fittings to PUB at pub_waterfittings@pub.gov.sg.
