A key component of DTSS Phase 2 is the future Tuas Water Reclamation Plant (WRP), which will be equipped with advanced technology to treat two separate streams of domestic and industrial used water in an energy-efficient manner. When ready in 2026, Tuas WRP will be co-located with NEA’s Integrated Waste Management Facility to form Tuas Nexus, Singapore’s first integrated used water and solid waste treatment facility that will be fully energy self-sufficient.
Tuas WRP will be receiving used water flows from the western part of Singapore by gravity via two separate deep tunnels – a tunnel to convey domestic used water and another to convey high-strength industrial used water. These two sources of used water will be treated separately.
Domestic used water will be treated at a 650,000m3/day module and then further purified to NEWater, while industrial used water will be treated at a 150,000m3/day module to international water quality standards before discharging to the sea.
Tuas Nexus will harness potential synergies of the water-energy-waste nexus by integrating used water and solid waste treatment processes. This maximises energy efficiency and generation as well as resource recovery, while maintaining a small footprint.
